Green Team – Composting

We participated in “Green Team” last year with one of our homeschool groups, and we loved it so much that we had to join up again this year.

Green team is for all things green – Earth-friendly, eco-friendly, environmentally conscious – you get the idea.  The kids learn about greenhouse gases, the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle), how to “precycle,” how to compost, ways to save on electricity, how to garden, buying local produce, the importance of landscaping with native plants, and SO much more.

My family is pretty eco-friendly already, but there is always room for improvement.  I don’t care where you land on the climate change “debate,” human beings need to be better stewards of this planet.  We have one home and what we do affects it.  There’s my soap box moment of the day.  😉

Last week we made compost, which will go toward our garden efforts next month.  We also released lady bugs, set out praying mantis eggs (I had to miss that part), and learned about the effects cow farts.  Tee, hee.

They are adding some pre-made compost, coffee grounds, fruit & veggie peels, etc

Tasty, right?  🙂

No compost would be complete without worms….

And every yard should have some lady bugs. (Please don’t judge me on my daughter’s hair.  She’s in a no brushing phase.)

Aren’t they sweet?  I love lady bugs!

I am excited about many upcoming field trips and other learning activities.  I am sure we will have lots of pictures and updates as we participate all through the spring.  GO GREEN!
