Leaves & Leaf Stucture Lesson Plan

I know it’s been a few weeks since I posted a science lesson plan.  Things have been a bit topsy-turvy recently.  However, things are getting back to normal and we are ready to begin our study of leaves and their structure.  We’ll start off the lesson by reading the book Catching Sunlight: A Book About Leaves and taking narrations.  After finishing the book (which is available in most libraries), we will use the following web resources:

Types of Leaves

Photosynthesis

Why Leaves Change Colors (movie from National Geographic & Brain Pop)

Leaf Stomata (website microscope slides)

I also found these coloring sheets, which are very nice!

Leaf Coloring Sheets

Vocabulary to Know:

  1. Apex
  2. Petiole
  3. Axial bud
  4. Stipule
  5. Photosynthesis
  6. Chlorophyll
  7. Carbon dioxide
  8. Serrated
  9. Compound
  10. Stomata

Our experiments will be “What’s Stomata?” and “Leaf Colors” in Janice VanCleave’s Biology for Every Kid.
