Plant Tissue Lesson Plan

This is installment #3 of our series of science studies on botany.  We are covering biological sciences this year, beginning with plants, then animals, and finally the human body.  Previous lesson plans can be found here and here.

To introduce the subject of plant tissue, we will be visiting the following websites:

Biology4Kids –  Xylem and Phloem

Primary Structure of a Dicotyledon Stem (VERY cool interactive microscope slides!!!)

Secondary Structure of a Dicotyledon Stem

After reviewing the websites, we have a few activities…a plant tissue crossword puzzle for Cole, and a plant tissue word search for Sydni (Zoey will help).

I would like to be able to observe and collect sap, but given our current location, it might take some planning.    We will be visiting the Nature Exchange at the Springs Preserve to (hopefully) observe rings in a section wood.

Vocabulary to Know:

  1. Cortex
  2. Xyelm
  3. Phloem
  4. Epidermis
  5. Endodermis
  6. Vessels
  7. Inner Core
  8. Sap
  9. Molecules
  10. Circulatory system

The kids will narrate some aspect of this lesson, most likely the experiment.  Speaking of which, the experiment for this lesson is “Water Flow”  from pg. 18-19 of Janice VanCleave’s Biology for Every Kid.
